For civilian airliners, Flight International publishes an annual airliner census. Search for "airline census" or "airline directory" on their archive page http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/search.aspx - I use the 1989 data as a base for Aeroflot and other Warsaw Pact "civilian" airlines, and the 1996 RL data for the west.I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end...

shows the approximate number of airworthy aircraft for selected types. While these are ex-military panes, most are in civilian hands. For example, about 35 T-6 Texans. 300 C-47 Skytrains and 150 P-51 Mustangs are still flying.
