Caradhras is right. If you're on Facebook already, accept the friend request. You don't HAVE to do anything more than accept the request. And depending upon her privacy setting, you might even be able to see her profile page and her photos pages, which will give you the answers you're looking for (i.e., is she still hot after all these years, and single) without having to message her.

And there have been tons of people who I've accepted friend requests from, and who've accepted them from me, who I've only known obliquely such as from a class or a job years ago, friend-of-a-friend, etc., without feeling the need, or they, to message back and forth.

Accept her friend request. Check out her profile and picture pages. See if she messages you first. Play it cool and let her do the talking from the get-go. She may not even message you. If what you see on her profile and picture pages is to your liking, you can decide from there...or let us know what's on your mind, and the assembled forum here (who you know wishes you well) will assist you. Remember the SAS motto; "Who dares, wins"...
