* maybe make the porters porter/guards - mainly for when the wagons stop overnight, mainly to prevent pilfering not attacks.
* how does Adam keep his horses with the military constantly in need of replacements The answer here may depend on how big an area he covers.
* Another rumour/plot hook could be that he is running a spy network
