  • Used bookstores - T2k resources

Thought I would share a story about a lucky find at a local used bookstore I like to frequent. I go there evry three weeks or so just to look around and see what I can find that looks interesting; sci-fi, fiction, history, doesn't matter.

So I was looking at the the discount rack and found two excellent books for T2k background data:

    1. Forces 1989 - ISBN 0-933852 85 1

This book features the USS Nimitz, military medicine, and article on the future of the APC, and info on the War in the Gulf.

    2. The Rapid Deployment Forces - ISBN 0-668-06211-8

This books is self explanatory. It covers RDF forces slated for the gulf; 101st Airborne, USMC, etc

Best part is I picked up each book for $3.

So if there is a used bookstore near you check it out. Maybe there are hidden treAsures for you too

My long-gone favorite local used bookstore had tons and tons of army FMs. A lot of it was pretty mundane stuff, but there were some interesting ones too. I seem to recall one that...crap I can't even remember what it was but there was a silhouette of a T62 from front, left & right side & rear with stadia drawn over each silhouette so it must have been for some kind of heavy weapon. At least that section of it anyway.
THIS IS MY SIG, HERE IT IS.

Sounds like it might have been the vehicle identification guide. Just my guess. But I agree, the used stores are a great source. My fav was/is Half Priced Books and Records. They're a chain, but they have LOADS of books on about every subject imaginable. Several years ago I picked up a set of Jane's (88-90 era) for $10 each. Of course I layed out close to a hundred bucks to get them all, BUT that was about 10 cents on the dollar for what they cost originally. I also picked up my second copy of the BYB there.. and many more. IT was/is a place I like to hit when I make the journey. I can spend hours in there. I just moved back into decent driving range for one, so I shall be back soon.. just have to watch it now since I don't have much book room or budget.

When my family goes camping up in Maine there's an 'antique' bookstore about an hour away. My Dad and I always make the trip because there's always great finds at great deals. I should spend some more time in the 'History/Military' section this year!

I'm lucky in that I live in a city that has four Half Price Books stores. But do not ignore Barnes & Noble; look to their Bargain Books section -- I once got a $120 book about World Air Power for $15.

Also, do not ignore Amazon and Alibris. I'll grant you that Alibris's shipping rates are choke-on-your-heart high, but it can be worth it given the low price of some of their books and the fact that you often can't find them anywhere else.

Makes sense. "If you're right with God, this is the only way you'll ever have to view a T62."

Janes's for 10 bucks each More than a dime a dollar. I've actually paid retail once for a set, more like a penny on the dollar. Worth it though. You're lucky to haves found those.

A few years ago I got a 2002-2003 copy of Jane's Military Vehicles and Logistics; I paid $90 at Half-Price Books, but that's a $550 book when it was new, and it was about 2006 when I bought it. It's like my biggest treasure.

Yeah - I got mine when I was flush with post-deployment money. Had them all of three months before some barracks thief stole them and sold them. Probably for beer money the idiot.

                  I was *so* pissed.

At least the chain of command knew how much those things cost - which meant they went ballistic. Never did find the rat.

Is the term *so* pissed equal to livid Because that is what I would be. I detest a thief I think above all. Had my truck stolen years ago with all my tools etc.. Was making a move. I commented I would kill the person if I found them (I was livid) to which a kid (early 20s) commented, 'just for stealing'.. yeah, since he took my livelyhood. The job I was moving too required I had those tools.. no tools, no job, and no job means no place to live, no food to eat.. That is why they hung horse thieves.. because it was often condeming the owner to the fate of death themselves. Nope, have NO love or like of a thief.

Here in Australia, a "pissed" person is absolutely rolling drunk.
"Pissed off" on the other hand has the same meaning as there.
So, were a few drinks involved afterwards
If it moves, shoot it, if not push it, if it still doesn't move, use explosives.

Well, yes. Of course drink was involved afterwards. Come now, you was a soldier, there is *always* drink involved. But in the local lingo, it means plotting murder and mayhem level of angry.

                            Drink, not necessarily.
