Hmmm I wonder if we can fit this into a timeline somewhere.

IIRC, we had a thread a while ago that speculated about John Paul II.

Many of the entries delt with the possibility of JPII staying in Vatican City or leaving before Rome was nuked. Some entries even speculated about JPII going to Poland and being stuck there as WWIII starts in Europe.

This story begins in 1139, while on a visit to Rome, when St. Malachy reportedly had a vision seeing the succession of the 112 popes who'd follow Pope Celestine II until the end of time. Although the prophecies are cryptic and esoteric to some, many historians believe they've proved remarkably accurate in describing each successive pope.

Now, after many centuries, the sobering truth is that we're down to the last popes in the prophecy. The current pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI is the 111th pope, and the next will be The Final Pope in Malachy's prophecy --- the 112th pope. According to Malachy, he'll be the pope who reigns when Jesus returns to judge mankind.

So, what exactly does the last prophecy say about the 112th pope It says: "In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Petrus Romanus (Peter the Roman), who will feed his flock amid many tribulations; after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the formidable (also translated, oedreaded or oedreadful) Judge will judge the people. The End.

So I guess the best we can do is wait and see who the Cardinals elect.

But if this guy has Peter in his name, and is from Rome.........

Time to raise the drawbridge, unleash the moat monsters and issue weapons to the troops, and finally, lock and load!!!!

I know the Pope selects his own Papal name when elected, but one of the potential candidates is called Peter...

As a non practicing Catholic, I was very interested to see who the new Pope would be.

I, for one, am pleased by the selection of the Cardinal of Argentina. I listened to his address. I was struck by his seeming humbleness. His choice of a new name, Francis. His pleasant manner to every one. Saying to everyone, "Good night. Thank you for coming."

I just hope that this man can lead the Church forward into the future. There is SO much work to be done. I wish him well.

I agree this could be a point of contention. But maybe, just maybe, Pope Francis will live up to the simplicity of his name sake, St Francis. As I read the writings of St. Francis, love each other, care for each other. The very basis of Christianity as I understand it.

Depends, it appears he is named after Francis Xavier of the Jesuit Order not the saint.

It could have been worse - if it had been an Italian cardinal who had served in Russian in WW2 I would be somewhat worried with my articles...
