Military Unit Symbols on maps

How many of you guys are familiar with military unit map symbols There are a couple different NATO and US standards, among others, and they have most elements in common. Can you read/interpret them, at least the basics (i.e. this is the 3rd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division)

I'm working on maps of the Kola Campaign and am planning on using them but if the consensus is that they confuse more than assist understanding I'll go back to square one...

A Key is Key

I reckon that most of us are probably familiar with military map symbols but there are some variations out there so, for clarity, a key would be helpful.

I'd second what Raellus said. Most of us are familiar at least with armor/cav, infantry variants, marines, artillery. But a key would make the document more accessible to a broader audience.

Honestly, as long as you don't over complicate it, I think you'll be fine.
I'd stick to basic maneuver units:
- Armor
- Marines/Naval Infantry
- Mountain/Alpine Infantry
- Mechanized/Motorized Infantry
- Airborne/Parachute Infantry
- Air Mobile/Air Assault Infantry
- Leg/Light Infantry

The font doesn't do designation but you can overlay type and size to make an infantry division.


I think the font can be downloaded here. https://games.juhlin.com/font/TOE_Unicode.ttf and you use the alt keys listed on the page above. I think when you type size is does a backspace and overlays it on the type.

The neat thing about fonts is you can scale them to any size without getting pixelated

I found a handy online generator here that I'm mostly happy with, and best of all, it was quick and is done!

The following is a sample:

I'm happy to do a key.

im partial to the 80s one as you call it. Keeping it simple also helps. I tried using some mapping apps but it can be really hard once you add a million units to the same area.

the us army uses what is called MIL 2525 for symbols. you can find a few generators on line for this. google 2525 symbols.
